Occupy Update December 19, 2011
50 people were arrested as members of OWS tried to occupy a fenced in lot known as Duarte Square which is owned by Trinity Church. The New York Times reported on Friday that this conflict between the church and protestors had been coming for weeks as well as that, owing to a land grant from colonial days, Trinity Church is a large property owner in lower Manhattan. Nobel Peace Prize Winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu, has urged Trinity to allow OWS to camp there.
Is this the next step of the Occupy movement? Occupy Harvard has agreed to remove their tents and retain only a geodesic dome that will serve as an information center. This is similar to OWS taking residence in office space after being evicted from Zuccotti Park, and Occupy Seattle being offered space in an Episcopal church after they were evicted.
Goldman Sachs has canceled some recruiting events at top colleges after they were disrupted by Occupy protestors. Harvard student Dylan Matthews, in a Harvard Crimson column, agrees that these events are a proper target for the Occupy movement.
Finally, “We are the 99%” has topped Yale University's annual top ten quotes of the year. Besides the Charlie Sheen and Herman Cain quotes, there are ones by Warren Buffet and MA senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren that show a growing awareness of the issues raised by OWS.
