The next time you hear the words “Fiscal Cliff”, “Sequester” or “Deficit”, think of Charles Dickens' "Artful Dodger."

It’s been easier, lately, to get through a day without hearing about the supposed fiscal crisis affecting the United States.

But that doesn't mean the topic has gone away, because it never goes away. The US and global monied elite regularly whip up fear around the deficit, whenever cover for a swindle is needed. So if you suspect that the recent smoke and noise is meant to distract you while your pocket is picked, your instincts are correct. The latest round of deficit hysteria has been orchestrated to allow Barack Obama to become the first United States President to cut Social Security and Medicare. And once that nasty little deed is done, we’re on the slippery slope to losing those programs entirely. It may end up being this President's enduring domestic legacy.

The Day Establishment Media Became the Story

With each and every new spasm of violence, in its aftermath, comes the rush to judgment.

Actually, that's putting it mildly. Establishment media love a good story, particularly a violent one. It temporarily satiates their appetite for destruction. Immediate judgement, and the so-called rush to it, is their model.

The best (read : most lucrative) tragedies can be turned into ongoing sagas, snippets of woe crammed between advertisements. A saga could consist of detailing ongoing human suffering. For example, chronicling the physical and psychological scars endured forever by terror's victims – in all its forms, wherever it occurs. Or reporting how Americans die violently everyday, often in preventable circumstances. At least, more preventable than randomly placed bombs. More below.

Once more, the shock, once more the disbelief.

A 117 year old tradition, a rite of Spring, runners from around the world competing in the elite Boston Marathon.

This year it is different. The wheel of violence stops on this annual scene of joy and celebration, marking it with scenes of carnage associated with foreign battlefields, capitals and cities in Europe, or Israel and Palestine, or the ethnic conflict and blood-soaked lands of Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia. Campaign For Our Communities brings together community groups, municipal organizations, and labor unions to accomplish what seems like an impossible task: convincing Massachusetts' legislators to raise taxes. What is surprising is they are making inroads – through good old fashioned grassroots efforts. While Campaign For Our Communities have been organizing for a while, they recently burst onto the front pages with a massive lobby day and rally led by Governor Deval Patrick. While the Governor and Campaign For Our Communities are pushing wide ranging revenue plans, the Speaker of the House, Robert DeLeo, prefers a more limited plan that focuses on transportation infrastructure first. One of the biggest changes in worker benefits over the last 30 years has been the shift from defined benefit retirement plans (i.e. pensions) to defined contribution retirement plans (IRAs). This shift was sold to workers as a way to give them more control over their finances. Given your vaunted rhetorical skills, this was all supposed to be a piece of cake. The swing states were trending your way. There was John King on the CNN electoral map placing even maybe North Carolina back in blue. You - well, your predecessor - kicked serious ass at your convention while your opponent stumbled and struck obsequious poses, before sticking his foot in his mouth - repeatedly. Post-mortems abound for the antiquated, decaying GOP, whose 2012 brand of screw-younomics appear to fall on increasingly on deaf ears.
